Wedding Vogue Throws a Wedding

Are you getting married? Do you want Molara & Gbemi to help plan and co-ordinate your wedding for FREE complete with ushers? If your answer is yes then this contest is yours, if your answer is no then you may want to tell someone whose answer you know will be yes. This season “Wedding Vogue” will run a 12-week special series, in which readers will help choose a couple to win their dream wedding planned and co-ordinated by Gbemi & Molara by voting on everything from contestants to winners. More than 100,000 votes are expected to be cast during this season.

What do you have to do?

Send us your story – how you met, who proposed, how, what type of wedding you will like to have (describe your special day) and why you should be picked as contestants. You will also need to attach your picture, wedding date and location. Send your stories to weddingvogue@yahoo.com.

Visit www.weddingvogue.blogspot.com every Monday for results, news and weekly tasks. Couples have until June 8th, 2009, to submit their stories for consideration. From the applications submitted, ten couples will be selected and featured on the blog debut segment of "Wedding Vogue Throws a Wedding" on June 22, 2009. Following that segment, readers will vote online to decide which ten couples will have a chance to contest to have their wedding planned and co-ordinated by Molara & Gbemi and be featured on Wedding Vogue.

Each week, readers will cast their votes to determine the couple that will win FREE Wedding Planning and Co-ordination by Gbemi & Molara. Every week the ten contestants will be given a task and one couple eliminated each week, this will be determined by votes cast weekly by wedding vogue readers. Rants of the week

Our 2 rants of the week have been done before but more and more people keep doing it.

Brides who wear gloves - whats up with that, now the grooms who wear gloves (comon now) . Can someone tell us what the reason for the gloves and please dont say style.

Okay people, what is up with you grooms and brides that can not tell your groom(s) that WEARING SUNGLASSES ON YOUR SPECIAL DAY IS JUST RAZZ (local). It is understandable if the bridal photo shoot is outside and he is with his groomsmen. But sitting on the high table, dancing into the hall, during your engagement/wedding ceremony and most annoying while taking intimate bridal portraits. VERY VERY VERY VERY RAZZ, so if you never knew, now you do!!!!

You may think that you and your fiancee have talked about everything, but have you discussed the issues that will make your marriage work? Answer these questions from Susan Pivers with your partner, and work towards a shared vision of what your relationship can be.

What percentage of our income are we prepared to spend to purchase and maintain our home on a monthly or annual basis?

Who is responsible for keeping our house and yard cared for and organized?

Are we different in our needs for cleanliness and organization?

Is one or both of us neat? Messy? A "pack rat?" An organizational wizard?

Money

How much money do we earn together? Now? In one year? In five years? Ten?

Spiritual Life

Do we share a religion? Do we belong to a church, synagogue, mosque or temple? More than one? If not, would our relationship benefit from such an affiliation?

See what happens when we go away for a while we get 41 comments lolll. How are you guys, hope everyone is fine? We are fine and everything is great, we have had a busy last week then there is Nigeria's heat and Nepa. We cant complain,we have taken time out to read all your comments, rants, questions etc and we will respond soon.

However, a very important topic since the whole ring issue came up. Is proposing a Nigerian thing? Or do we just talk about getting married and do it? Must you wear an engagement ring before you are married? What does an engagement ring mean to you? Can you value a ring just by looking at it or you just think you can? All girls want expensive rings but if your boyfriend gave you a cheap ring will you say no to his proposal? Guys do you feel spending over 250k naira on your bride to be's ring a waste? A Very Special Wedding Vogue Afternoon

Hello All,

How are you , hope everyone is fine? First and foremost we will like to thank ALL of the brides, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride, vendors and every other person who stopped by to see us on Saturday afternoon. Despite the rain, distance and all you all still made it, thank you so much. I hope you had as much fun as we did. It was nice meeting our readers and listening to all your comments, questions and suggestions.

A lot of you may be wondering what happened at the Wedding Vogue Afternoon, well we will try to summarize it for you all.

The afternoon started with Molara and Gbemi rushing to set up and get ready for the afternoon. We were trying to decide if to go with our program or just let the day flow. Then we got a call from our darling Dammy who called in to say hi and wish us luck - Thanks Dammy. Anyway we were finally ready and its 1 o'clock - our first guests Ricky and her mum. The looked every inch like sisters, it was nice to have a mom there because she was able to give us an insight into how parents think. But she is so different from the usual parent, very cool and down to earth. As the day went by we had different guests and loads of questions. Some of them included:

Who are you?

What exactly do planners do?

How much do you charge? (was asked by almost everyone)

Who have you worked for before or whose weddings have you done?

Do we have to hire both Molara and Gbemi together?

How do we know who is real and who is good from all these websites?

Where are you based?

How early should we get a planner?

Molara and Gbemi are bestos who disagree on almost everything :) but agree on certain things. You can hire which ever one of us you feel you connect to the most it doesn't matter, its your wedding and you have to be comfortable with your planner. We plan, consult and co-ordinate events. Why must you do every pose your photographer tell you to do, even when you feel stupid doing it? Todays rant is called 'SO YOU THINK YOU CAN POSE'.

1. Bridal party that think they can pose - enough of the jumping poses please.

2. Please what the heck is leg out or should we say kick it/all leg out pose lollllll.

3. Can you stop taking pictures of the grooms men carry the bride or the groom, it is so
annoying. Half of them dont even know the bride or are not the grooms friends.

4. Oh yes - the garden pose. Sitting on the floor with flowers around you.

5. The ring on the finger of oruka ti do wo no pose for grooms - are you kidding me

6. The Lagbaja pose - with both your hands over your face

7. Brides getting ready - can you stop getting photographed in your buba and underskirt please

Wedding cake has its origins from a Roman wedding tradition of breaking a small loaf of bread over the bride's head for fertility. But today's tiered wedding cake has its origins from the Middle Ages. Guests would often bring small cakes that would be stacked on top of each other. The bride and groom would try and kiss over the top of the cakes without toppling them for luck and prosperity. In time, this wedding tradition would evolve and the cakes would all be covered with the same icing.

New Trends in Wedding Cakes
The round cakes are begin to give way for square cakes and stacked cakes are still very much in .
Flowers are being replaced by items such as sea, shells or stars, bows butterflies, beads and crystals depending on the theme of the wedding.

Unusual shapes have also become a favorite with brides

Hand printed/crafted cakes are fast becoming popular which most time takes the design from the wedding dress of the brides

Striped cakes
Less is more

Simple smooth surface cakes with little or nothing on it.

Flowers toppings and figurines which tried to make a come back are fast given into cake jewels and initials which are becoming popular by the day with modern brides.

Bolder colours are taking the centre stage now
Who would have thought of brown, red or yellow cakes years ago? It was unheard of most cakes were cream or white but now we have become bolder in our choices.
Fruit cakes have given way to more exciting flavours such as chocolate, red velvet, sponge, lemon etc

Used as centrepieces
In order to make sure all your guest have a piece of your wedding cake, you could make miniatures sizes of your wedding cake and use it as the centerpiece for table setting.

Wedding Vogue Afternoon

What is Wedding Vogue Afternoon? Well we could not come up with any name for it. We are having an open house. Molara and Gbemi are currently both in London and on 15th March 2008 we will be hosting brides, groom, vendors and would be planner to a very special afternoon. You can stop by to meet with us for free consultations, get to ask all your wedding worry questions/industry questions for free. How was the planning process for you?
The wedding planning process was generally fine. I guess it was so because my sister had emotionally blackmailed me into organizing her wedding about a year and a half before mine. She wasn't around until about a week and a half to the dates so she dished out instructions over the telephone.

What part of the wedding did you enjoy the most?

Dancing!! The music was great. EVERYONE was on the dance floor at both events especially at the wedding reception. Music has a great impact on how lively and fun an event is - I duff my hat to Akin & the Suga band. We just couldn't stop dancing. It was made better by the smiling faces of our guests who were having the time of their lives too.

If you could change anything what would it be?

Absolutely nothing. All went according to plan. No nasty surprises with our vendors hence my wife was all smiles - and my oh my, she looked so beautiful. :) No hitches or delays with the church service or reception which was great for me (I'm not a great fan of long and boring speeches). That left us with loads of time for grooving......

Advice for grooms

a) Guys by God's grace you'll go through the whole process just once in your lifetimes (it better be only once unless you want to go bankrupt ......lol).

b) Take control of managing stress levels and remain focused on the prize - your bride. Don't let an event of two days affect your happiness thereafter. Therefore don't flare up at the slightest upset or unreasonable expense presented to you.

c) Do the thinking about life after the wedding and don't get involved in expenses you know you truly cannot afford in the name of making your bride happy or meeting up with societal expectations.

The wedding process was very easy for me, my job was to write the checks, say yes and try to keep my wife from beating up the wedding planner when she got too frustrated.

I enjoyed seeing my wife's big smile as well as all the people who can to share in our great day.

If you could change anything about the day what would it be?

I would have had the reception closer to the church. (it took an hour plus to get from the church to the reception)

Any advice to grooms about to get married?

Grooms, give your wife full control, as guys we really don't care, allow her to do what she wants for that day.Every now and then just shakara her that there is no more money and that way she may end up spending a little less, but get your pocket book ready.

It was very hectic. my wife was abroad most of the preparation time so i had to be the interface between both families.i did not use the services of a wedding planner either, so it was really tough.

Really?....i enjoyed the end, when it was time to be alone.everything else was us trying to conform to people's expectations.

If you could change anything about the day what would it be?

I would gladly change a few things, but this one thing must go:parental interference.they almost ran us crazy.it was their event not ours. 'this is how its done, that is how its done'.that's all we kept hearing.

Any advice to grooms about to get married?Beware of your fiance(loll),she has dreamt about that day almost all her life, so everything has to be fairytale.try to give her a reality check. it will save your marriage.

How was the wedding planning process for you?

My wife's family handled much of the event(s) so I wasn't that involved (Luckily). It was obvious that the organisation and overall deliverance of the events were top quality, because the remarks given afterwards were all great... I know the Dokpesi's went through enormous efforts to make sure nothing had been forgotten. I praise Dolapo (My wife)'Super Girl' for her good work and also my family and friends for their contributions and support during both events...Also, both families gave continuous praise to the the creativity provided by the planners. "Good show"

What did you enjoy most on your wedding day?

The moment I was locked in a dance with Dolapo. That was probably the biggest moment of my life. I never had so many people looking at me at once (apart from when i was disciplined in secondary school during assembly in front of many). During the dance, that was when it hit me... "Shuks, I'm married you know?"

If you could change anything about the day what would it be?

That would be the departure of my Grandfather "Papa" on the same day. I would liked him to have been there during my dance, so that he can laugh at my moves. But since he was somewhere better anyway, i can't blame him at all. I know he had a smooth journey all the way...

Any advice to grooms about to get married?

This is Del's directory to getting married. You must follow these for early success... You can either be enjoying your first few months together in front of the television enjoying her cooking. Or she can be screaming at you while you have your head in your hands asking God "what have i done?"

You must: 1. Make sure you are really in love with her and she's someone you can spend the rest of your life with (Don't be scared about the last part)

2. Both of you go to a group marriage counselling (Its ok... you will learn some new things about each other here... take a 3 month course like i did)

3. Learn to compromise. You gotta change a bit... Nod your head when she speaks and give her a few good comments a year (joking about the year) when she'd not expecting it.

4. Get closer to God. Pray together in the morning before you leave for work (just 5 min, take it in turns) and go to church on Sundays. Ask God for a good marriage... Peace.

2. When dancing into the reception, if you know you can dance please let me do it for both of us. Don't hold me back saying baby chill, cos I know if you were the better dancer God help me.

3. Can I write my own 'Grooms Response' PLEASE!! I may not want to thank you or your uncle first, I just want to speak from my heart - you will be surprised.

4. FYI- We don't really like you kneeling to feed us cake but please do it because you look good to my family. Cut the 90's girl %^&*$ - its not cool.

Why I went into cake making?

I started baking cake at age 14, I really started baking professonally in 1997 at Basildon UK.
I had just had my first baby and was a stay at home mom,(was trained as a professional accountant but had to leave my job to take care of my baby), so I deciced to turn my hobby into a profession. I took some culinary and sugarcraft couses at Squires Kitchen, Surrey England and started my cake making business out of my kitchen in 1999.
In 2000, I & 2 staff moved to a store location at Basildon ,where we served the local bakery shoppers oven fresh cakes and pastries daily. This we did till 2004 when we sold the bakery due to relocation with my family to Atlanta,USA.
Once in GA, I took some additional sugarcraft courses to brush up my skills at the Int'l school of SugarCraft Norcross GA,(owned by world renowed sugar artist-Mr Nicholas Lodge) . In 2005,I got EdibleCraft registered and started baking for the public once again.
In effect,I've been doing cakes professionally for 10 years now.

Basic pricing for Buttercream cakes $3.50 per serving ,minimum 100 people
Basic pricing for Fondant cakes : $4.5 per serving,minimum 150 people.

Advise for couples when choosing their wedding cake:
Choose your baker by sampling their wedding cakes, if possible, and looking over their album of cake designs and styles. Your fantasy becomes reality with a creative baker.
Select your months in advance...and be prepared to describe your wedding theme,color swatches, the number of guests, location and time.

Multitiered cakes are generally assembled at the reception site. Be sure you allow enough time for delivery and set up.
A deposit of 25 to 30 percent is customarily given at the time you place your order.
Request from your baker,a receipt and CONTRACT signed by you and your baker,describing the type of cake you've ordered, its filling, icing, style, and color of decorations.

RANTS OF THE WEEK

1. Really ladies let us talk, what is the big deal about throwing the bouquet. Why is it when they call single girls even those of you that dont have men still act like you do. Even when you see the bride calling you and looking sad you still refuse.

2. We blogged about this before but we have to say it again cos it is getting soooooo out of hand, please talk to your parents about the chairman they pick for your wedding. We understand that some like to use their big friends but come on - they dont have to bore the crowd, take your own wedding personal or start making a show out of the job.

3. Brides this is for you - braids used to be forbidden for the bride but now more and more brides are braiding their hair and it is beautiful. Please brides before you bride, weave, fix weave on or just style the hair please try to retouch a week in advance at least. UNDERGROWTH is not cute.

What the difference between an MC and a Comedian?
The Master Compere or master of ceremonies is the person in charge of letting people know how the event will unfold. (Usually the geeky, serious looking guy with the microphone) but doing a straight job, no quips and witty interjections. The Comedian is that person the is JUST supposed to make you laugh. If he is paid he is under more pressure to deliver.

People say it’s hard for comedians to be Mc’s because you crack the same jokes at every wedding, nothing new and no creativity for weddings?
Well I guess it depends on the M.C, usually I would recommend a good Compere who is also a good comedian for weddings because this would help with the setting and mood of the event. A comedian might not just be appropriate and a Master of Ceremony might not just be good because people might just want to laugh. I have always believed that not every comedian and M.C can handle weddings. It takes a gifted person with all the qualities of a comedian and M.C to successfully steer the ship of the wedding because a lot of things like respect for guest, appropriate handling of protocol and so many other trade secrets are involved. So that’s it basically.

MC’s/Comedians charge N150k – N1mil for a wedding, how do you justify your fee?
Well I guess nothing good comes easy and in my opinion if you want the best then you have to pay. Some people would like to use king Sunny Ade for their wedding while some other can’t just be bothered with who is playing. To them "music is music" if you want a classy wedding then you go for the best. If you go for the best then you have to pay the best. There are no two ways about it. I hope this does not come across as being pompous but it is just the truth.

How do you stay funny?

Well research helps a lot, everyday experiences also help to broaden the mind but I guess the best assistance to being funny is reading.

What do you look forward to at weddings?

The couple coming into the venue always blows my mind. It’s like two young people with all the love in the world in their hearts. Dancing, giving glory to God and deciding to go through life together no matter the odds. I also like the part where the couple kiss. Some brides are so shy to kiss in the presence of their parents and I go ah! You better kiss! Because we already know what you will be doing later, since you have a new drivers licence

What don’t you look forward to?
The Chairman’s advice. A lot of times it is too loooooooooooooooong and boring and this puts pressure on the compere to lift the crowd again. Then the toast can be terrible if the toast master does not know what to say which the case is usually. I believe couples should meet with the M.C before the event to straighten all these out.

We have watched Nigerian Comedy grow; you guys are doing your thing and doing a great job. You know you are appreciated, what should we watch out for from you next?
Well we will not be here without the support of fantastic people like you. We are diversifying into more fields of Comedy which I think is good for the industry. We seem to have concentrated too much on Stand up Comedy and this is why there seems to be the usual talk of repetition. As for me I will be coming out with a monthly Comedy Magazine called Laffmattazz, and I have plans to float a comedy Television Station and I know that my colleagues have plans for other things like a Comedy school and so many other fantastic ideas.

Alright people what is it with this jewelry, we have been seeing so many. What is it with huge pendants, coloured beads that do not match your outfit and over long chains? We understand your parents make you were some of them but there must be a way to say no nicely.

Brides and bridesmaid please you have no excue not to SHAVE. Whether you are wearing a strapless dress or not, you MUST shave. Saying you are a bridesmaid and not the bride does not help either - you must SHAVE. It is just nasty for a bride or her bridesmaids to have hair under their armpits on the special day.

Why and when did you decide to take over the company or go into shoe repairs?
I really can't say when I decided to take over Lady Cobbler, but I’d always hang out at my Mum's place of work (Lady Cobbler) as a child after school & during the holidays so I knew all the ins and outs of the business i.e. where my Mum bought her machines, materials from, how she hired staff, how she dealt with customers etc.We (my siblings and I) would actually help count how much money had been made at the end of everyday! I was probably about 18/19 years old when I knew I would definitely open my own L.C one day, I guess growing up in the shop only made it natural for me to go into that line of business when I grew up. That aside I have a passion for shoes as well.

What service does Lady Cobbler provide?
Our services regarding leather repairs include expansion, size reduction, dyeing, top heel, protector and so much more.

Why do you feel couples need your service:

Our services are needed because everyone wears shoes, carry bags, used suitcases, wear belts, etc and all these things will in time be in need of repairs. E.g.: A lot of our customers bring their brand new shoes to us for expansion, to put a protector on the sole, to cut the heel because they are too high and so on & so forth. It is not a necessary service people want but a service people need.

How affordable are your services?
The services we offer are very affordable and range from N500 to N7, 500

Where is Lady Cobbler located?

We are located at Wuraola House, 82 Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos 01-7919051. We are open Monday to Friday from 09.00am to 06.00pm and on Saturdays at 10.00a.m to 04.00p.m

Advice for brides:
My advice is not only for brides but for the groom, bridesmaids, groomsmen, mothers of the bride etc. Brides should look for shoes that reflect their personalities and a shoe that makes her very very comfortable. (I cannot stress that enough). Do not go for a shoe that is not your usual style just because it is your wedding, stick to what you are used too. Classic is always chic; they never go out of fashion. It is okay to accessorize your shoes but keep it simple.

1. Unfortunately not all families are perfect or live happily ever after but that should not be

obvious during ones wedding. Do you not just hate it when mum and dad are

divorced/separated and that becomes an issue when it is time to make the wedding

invitations. Next week we will give you tips on wedding invitation for the troublesome

parents.

2. What is it that bride and groom do while taking pictures that they waste so much time before

coming in for the reception - very annoying.

3. Grooms - it is okay to take your jacket off for reception especially is you are sweating like a

Christmas goat.

4. Tissue residue on brides face - chief bridesmaid do your job, you should make sure her face is

always on point at all time.

5. Dropping gown - brides who do not fit their gowns before their D day. It is annoying to see a

So... Here it goes...Picture this:

March 25, 2006, Tosin's birthday. It was a Saturday afternoon, and Yemi drove from Louisville to Nashville to come and spend my birthday with me. He brought me a bouquet of sunflowers, very pretty. Yemi told me he had made dinner reservations for my birthday, and he'll be picking me up from church after choir practice, so I had to dress nice.
Anyways, since it was my birthday, I didn't suspect anything, though I thought he was acting weird and Doyin (my younger sister) was acting extra nice. He picked me up for dinner at 7pm, and we went to the Cascades Restaurant at Gaylord Opryland Resort (beautiful scenery and good food, if you're in the Nashville area, it's a great place to visit). After dinner, we went on a riverboat ride on the Delta River, an indoor river at the resort. The boat was decorated with red and white rose petals, there was champagne on ice and Frank Sinatra's "It had to be you" was playing in the background. Now, I'm thinking to myself, "This is a really nice birthday, I could really get used to this!"
I was beginning to feel relaxed and enjoy the scenery, when we got to this beautiful waterfall. I was just about to talk to Yemi about the waterfall when he got on his right knee and asked me to marry him! Being the goofy person that I am, I laughed really hard for two minutes (out of joy, of course) and said yes! Well, the rest is history.

Seun & I planned our wedding, and we enjoyed making our day very personal. There were a lot of discussions, disagreements, making up but We were a very good team, especially because all the planning took place over emails, phone calls, it was long distance.

If you could change anything what would it be?
God exceeded my expectation I won't change a thing

If you could add anything what would it be?
Not necessarily add, but I would have relaxed more during the planning process, and just trusted God by not worrying

Any advice for brides to be ....
Have fun at every stage, the wedding process flies by too fast

Bridal Shower Themes

The job of planning a shower for the Bride-to-Be falls on the maid of honor. But it is just as common for all the bridesmaids to pitch in. Showers are not meant to be male bashing, in-law bashing parties. Keep your sad stories to yourself or save your story for when you are alone with the bride.

If you are invited to a shower DO NOT invite other guests – most times showers are intimate. If you are required to invite other guests you will be told.

If you cannot afford to host a shower do not volunteer – it is extremely TACKY to go round collecting money from friends of the bride you don’t know. Gather a few common friends that you KNOW and raise funds.

How we got engaged

Oma:

Like every girl, I had imagined how I wanted to be proposed to, not taking into consideration that it is the guy's call. My imagination became wishful thinking in December 2005.
Three nights to Christmas of 2005, I had gotten into a big fight with Jojo and as far as we were concerned, we had broken up. Somehow, on the 24th, we got chatting online trying to resolve our differences and he ended up taking me to dinner. The following day (Christmas day), he picked me up from my place and we went to church together. After church, I went over to his place where his family was gathered for christmas. After a while, I noticed he wasn't downstairs so I went in search of him. I found him in his room lying on his bed in a meditative mood. I was wondering what was wrong with him then he asked me to pass a bag to him. I did, he brought out a box and handed it over to me saying "here's your christmas gift". I took it expecting it to be an earring and when I opened the box, it was a ring! I waited a while for him to say something but he didn't. I gave him the ring and asked what this was meant to be and his response was "THE RING SAYS IT ALL". Wow! There was NO will you marry me? There went my "imaginary ideal proposal". We told our parents about the ring and said there would be no wedding until after my MBA. Little did I know there was more to come.
On 17 February 2007, Jojo called to find out when I was gonna be done with classes on Monday Feb. 19th. I told him noon and was wondering what errand he wanted me to run. Then he said, be ready at 6.30pm the dress code is business casual. I then assumed that we were going out with his colleagues. You know, something official.
When we got to the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch on 19 February 2007, I realized that he had booked a table for 2 at their restaurant. He started off with a toast to his future wife, many more years together, love --------. That was not the norm but I still did not suspect anything. Whilst having our dinner, the waitress brought two tickets for a gondola ride and I remembered Jojo asking her if the show would be on since it had begun raining. I still had no clue of Jojo's intentions and thought it was one of his usual treats.
After dinner, it was raining heavily so we couldn't go on our ride. Jojo excused himself and asked me to sit in the lounge. When he got back he sat down. I was wondering if we were waiting for the rain to stop or what? Then he started talking incoherently which is NOT Jojo, because my man is a smooth talker. He said "I know I am rambling, this is not perfect because if it were perfect it wouldn't be raining now, When people ask for a ladies hand in marriage they give them a ring, but I have something other than a ring to give you". And then he brought out a diamond bracelet and wore it round my wrist. I was so confused that all I could say was thank you over and over again and ---(see me for more details, ha ha).
I always dreamt of being proposed to on a ship cruise. I came close to being proposed on a boat rather than a ship but the rain prevented it. By the way, I never shared my dream proposal with Jojo nor with anyone that could have mentioned it to him.
A word of advice to everyone, please don't stop dreaming because I can testify that dreams do come true. We are who we think of ourselves. So think good thoughts towards you and have high aspirations. God Bless.

My darling Oma is a romantic, while I am your typical Nigerian man, simple and short. Left to me I would have had her go with me to pick out the ring, but knowing her I wanted to do it right. So I had planned dinner at the Hyatt and we were suppposed to go on a Gondola ride where they would sing in italian to us and I was going to propose then. But that was not to be. It was raining cats and dogs, so my carefully planned proposal was being destroyed. Being the creative person Oma has made me, I improvised. I grabbed some chairs in the lounge, and yes I did ramble a litte, then I asked the most important question of my life "Will you marry me?" I dont remember her saying yes, but I guess she did since we are planning on geting married on the 22nd of December. I guess it's all good.

Why jewellery making?
I will be the first to tell you I wasn't born with this but it was an interest I developed. I had a desire to do this and I went for it. I love stones, I just can't help it!

Do you have any formal training?
Well, I don't know if this passes for formal but I took a one day course to harness my skills but a lot of what I know comes from research I have done. I soak in a lot of information pretty quickly and that has come in extremely handy for me.

Do you train people interested in making jewellery?
Not yet. I hope to get there as there is still a lot of ground to cover.

How did you start?
From the very beginning! (Laughs)!

How has the market been for you?
Considering how new I am in this, I would dare say it has been pretty receptive although I am still working on my reach but I am grateful to God for what I have done so far!

What would you say the look is for Nov – Jan Brides?
Do not be scared to accessorize, lots of colours as well but do it right

What is your price range?
It really depends on the type of stones used but my pieces are chic and affordable.

What stones are expensive – which ones are not?
I believe every stone is a classic as they all have stories behind them and I treat them all as such but there are four stones whose reputation precede them and they are Diamonds, Emeralds, Sapphire and Ruby.

What was your favorite part of the wedding?

To be honest, the favorite part of our wedding was seeing all our planning and hard work come to fruition. The ceremony and reception turned out just the way we wanted and we couldn’t be more blessed. We had such a blast and having all our friends and family there to celebrate with us and seeing everyone having such a good time made us absolutely happy.

How was the planning process for you?

Two words – WORRY FREE. I pretty much did not stress over the little things and did not turn into a BRIDEZILLA (my bridesmaids can attest to that). I knew what I wanted, stuck to my decisions and set out to find the best possible bargains. Also, our families were great, especially our parents who pretty much let us take the reins without interference. Finally and most importantly, it was hella fun.

If you could change anything, what would it be?

Hmm! That’s a hard one because I think we are content with the way things turned out.

If you could add anything, what would it be?

My mom could not attend due to circumstances beyond our control and would have loved/killed to have her there you know.

Any advice for Brides-to-be?

You cannot pray enough, do not sweat the small stuff, learn when to let go, throw procrastination out the window, and do not ruin/neglect your role in your relationship because you are solely focused on the wedding day itself. A wedding is one day but a marriage union is a lifetime. And ladies, most importantly, do have fun planning your dream wedding.

The planning process, the excitement, the anticipation for the big day.

How was the planning process for you?
FUN!!!! I hired a wedding planner and so, the planning process wasn't too stressful, I had a good time planning it and above all, I made a lifelong friend during the process. It doesn't get any better than that :-)

If you could change anything what would it be?
Nothing, Absolutely nothing, I had my dream wedding :-)

If you could add anything what would it be?
An extra wedding day or maybe even two days. Make the Engagement a two day event and wedding day a two day event hehehehe lolllllll

Any advice for brides to be?
Seriously brides-to-be, the only advice I would give is that you should PRAY. There's nothing impossible for God to do. One of the major reasons why my wedding was perfect was because my wedding planner was there... She almost didn't make it to the wedding cos of personal reasons but I reported her to God and asked him to take control and to God be the glory, she bought her ticket a day before the wedding. To be honest, I told God all that I wanted for the wedding including finding the perfect dress to the flowers that will be used for the decoration, I prayed for everyone and everything that was going to be involved in the wedding, including those that would be sweeping the floors and arranging the chairs to the ministers and musicians, to the cow and ram that guests will eat. My wedding day was on environmental sanitation day and my mum was a bit worried that it'll be chaotic becos of traffic and all that but to God be the glory, Environmental Sanitation was cancelled that saturday :-) I know that every bride knows that they HAVE to get a wedding planner/co-ordinator. There's no "ifs or buts" about it, yes it's expensive but well worth it. If you can save for it, PLEASE DO IT, if you don't have the means, ask Baba God to provide, I know He will. By the time of your wedding, you will be pimple-free and stress-free. Your pictures will look flawless and you will enjoy your day.Also, brides-2-be, you have to know that the devil will try EVERYTHING possible to ruin your day, you can not allow that to affect you, don't stress over things you can't control. I ordered my shoes and bags from this lady in NY and at first, I didn't like the ones she sent cause the heels weren't high enough and so I returned them back and asked that she ordered new ones. Well, my shoes and bags were supposed to get to me the day I was leaving for Nigeria but guess what? It didn't make it, I got a call from the post office while on the plane to Nigeria that the plane that was supposed to bring my shoes got struck by lightning....LOLL, Can you beleive that? in the month of May? no rain no nothing. When I heard that I couldn't stop laughing, I just thought it was the funniest thing I have ever heard in my life. Well, I had to look for plan B, good enough, my sisters were coming the next day so I just figured, they'll pick it up from the post office and bring the shoes with them, well, Guess what? I have three sisters and my one sister that had the shoes and bags didn't make it on the plane............. but made it to Nigeria 3days before the wedding........ I have lots and lots of stories but I think you get the gist. In conclusion, my advice for brides to be is this: Get a wedding planner/co-ordinator and Pray, Pray, Pray.. Pray for your wedding planner/co-cordinator and everything and anything you'd need for the wedding(Don't be bashful, there's nothing too small or too big to pray about) sit back and enjoy your day/s.

What was your favourite part of your wedding?
I was so excited to see old family members and meet so many new ones. I really felt like just about everyone who was important (although some close friends, were unable to make the event, I made peace with that long before the wedding) to me came from all over the world to grace the occasion. I saw aunts and uncles that I hadn't seen since I was a child, the out pour of love and support was fantastic. I absolutely loved that and it meant everything to me. Let me also add, I was so excited to see everything come together, the BM dresses, the programs, the cake, the hall- I was so thankful to God for everything. We also had a blast with all the girls sleeping over the night before, all my bms were either girls, I had known all my life or girls that would be there for the rest of my life. Ok, I know that's more than one favourite. :)

How was the planning process for you?
FUN, FUN, FUN! I learned so much about myself during the process; it also helped to have a fabulous wedding planner, who cared so much about me and everything else. I certainly had those moments where I wished response times were faster etc. but all in all the planning process was fun for me.

If you could change anything what would it be?
Oh my, I honestly can't think of anything.

If you could add anything what would it be?
I would have loved to have my maternal grandpa there, he meant so much to me and we were super close but he passed away in 2005. Rest in Peace grand daddy, love ya! :)

Any advice for brides to be
1) Prayer is the key! If there were no other time, where you put your complete faith and trust in God, now is the time to start.
2) Focus! Just focus on what you want, there's so much out there, try not to get confused. Every bride is different, what works for someone else and looks great, may not necessarily work for you. Every bride is unique and be sure to hunt for bargains.
3) Your wedding day does not determine what your marriage will be like. The wedding is only a day event (well a couple of days for most Nigerian women), your marriage lasts a lifetime. At the end of the day, you and your hubby- to- be come first. Don't get so stressed out that you both can't enjoy your day.
4) Nurture your relationship during the planning process. It just makes things go so much smoother, my hubby was super supportive; he was my rock, literally. He didn't care about details etc but he was the first person I turned to when I felt any anxiety about anything.
5) Your supporting cast is so important. Surround yourself with caring yet honest bms, a great wedding planner (if you're planning a wedding across the shores, this is super important as you can't respond nor see to everything yourself immediately), tried and tested beauty experts (makeup artists, hair care folks, get your dress from a reputable retailer), all these will alleviate unnecessary stress.
6) Finally- Have fun while it lasts. You'll be so happy you did. All the best girls! :)

Underwear Tip

This has nothing to do with religion or superstition but a bride should not wear black underwear on her wedding day. But for one or all of the following reasons:

If for any reason your dress rips it will not be too obvious

White is innocent (like you are supposed to be)

Black underwear can change the color of your dress

You need to wear something on the sexy side underneath your dress so when you take off your gown you can surprise your groom - pink, white, light blue, red not BLACK.

Cream or beige is a better option!

Some people actually take pictures with them thinking its cool IT IS NOT. You really should not be stressed or worried on your special day and those people calling, na wa for you. Why would you call a bride or groom during her/his event?

Rant 2 - Aso Ebi Girls/Ladies

When a friend is getting married we the females are the first to start asking, "how much is the aso ebi", "are we not doing aso ebi", "Keep two for me" and more. You have now bought the aso ebi, made something slamming or an "i think its slamming" outfit. A few days to the wedding like we all do sometimes, gather at the brides house or call her, start going on and on about how if you need any help on that day we would be there or what song are we dancing in too. Telling the bride to be- you this bride you better dance oh anyway we your Friends are there to show them. ASO-EBI GIRLS/LADIES why on the day of event do you run and hide or start acting like a worm. All your demo...............are you forming, are you shy or you just can not dance. But really it is very annoying and you all know yourselves :)

Rant 1 - Cake Support

When you pick your wedding cake what do you think about? Size, color, style, how many people you want it to feed and lots more? So can someone please tell us why it takes 5 to 10 people to cut it. Usually when it's time to cut the cake the chairperson or the cake maker "supervises/leads" the cutting, so WHY is it that they have to call Chief XYZ, Alhaji and Alhaja XYZ, Mazi XYZ and co. Like someone said today it is to "support" the bride and groom. Hmmmmmmmmmmm "support" as in to catch the cake when it falls or help the couple cut the cake if it's too hard for them. We just don't get it.............Help!

Okay people, what is up with you grooms and brides that can not tell your groom(s) that WEARING SUNGLASSES ON YOUR SPECIAL DAY IS JUST RAZZ (local). It is understandable if the bridal photo shoot is outside and he is with his groomsmen. But sitting on the high table, dancing into the hall, at the engagement and most annoying while taking intimate bridal portraits. VERY VERY VERY VERY RAZZ, so if you never knew, now you do!!!!

The new "Iyawo aso-oke buba". You might be wondering, whats so new about this. Well, Wande pictured on the left is looking every bit the fab iyawo. Her buba is made from aso oke - Hand Cut Aso-Oke Buba. Some aso-oke specialists add beads, sequins and other things to the buba while some just like it plain. Thanks Wande!!!!

Asoi-ebi is something that has no timeline we all agree and in the past year or two ankara has been the vogue. Ankara is still waxing strong but joining ankara are tie 'n' dye, batic and adire. We should have pictures up for you soon.

And finally the guys, when it comes to aso ebi for guys the most you will find is guys in white or coordinating head-wear(fila/cap). Now the guys are out in amazing prints for traditional and coordinating shirts and ties for
white wedding regardless of being on the bridal train or not.

What was your dream wedding idea? Nice, classy, hip…full of fun and love!!

If you could change anything what would it be? Not hiring a coordinator for the day of event. I found myself fretting a bit on the high table, sending messages to the hostess to make sure this and that is done.
If you could add anything what would it be? Nothing… every thing went accordingly.

Favorite Moment: When we changed to traditional attire, everyone loved our outfits….It felt like we were royalty!!!

What kept you grounded during the planning? Our love (just kidding)… the fact that I was doing something I love to do…..planning an event (my event).

Advice for brides to be? Whatever you do, GET A CO-ORDINATOR!!!!! You need one.

How and why did you pick your dress?
I saw my dress on the front page of the bridal gown website (fall collection) and fell in love with it. Went to the store and had 3 choices (mine was 1st choice of course) and it worked out well. I choose it because I loved it but also because it was different, not anything anyone I know would wear….Champagne with a Latte sash….

KENNY & BUSOLA

Busola and I have been together for so long that we knew we were going to get married. The question was, when? I decided to ask for Busola's hand in marriage on her graduation day, but her parents were not quite ready for that. With some perseverance and divine grace, I was able to win the heart of her parents and I asked for their blessing in November 2005.
Sometime after Busola's graduation, she started to get the drift that I was not going anywhere, so every now and again; we would window shop for engagement rings. We also took advantage of every moment we had together to plan our future; but for me, I was certain that d-day was nearer. With all the aforementioned preparations, I was more than ready for the d-day! I arranged with a dear friend of mine to purchase a beautiful engagement ring to surprise her on her 25th birthday. Marry me Busola, my Queen… Well, let me just say that I've enjoyed the difference between a boyfriend and a fiancée, and I can't wait to enjoy the lifelong difference between a fiancée and the MAN.
